چکیده

We study the validity of the recently proposed universal plasmon ruler in the present work using a combination of numerical techniques based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, and semianalytical theories based on the coupled dipole approximation. By incorporating nonlocal effects for closely spaced two-dimensional gold nanocylinder dimers, we find using both the FDTD and semianalytical approaches that the universal plasmon ruler of Jain et al. is not applicable for gold nanocylinder dimers with diameters smaller than about 20 nm. The nonlocal effects are also found to strongly reduce the electric field enhancements at very small gap distances. Taken together with previous results, we are able to establish the valid size range for the universal plasmon ruler of gold: 20 nm diameter metal nanostructure dimers at the smaller end, and 70 nm diameter metal nanostructure dimers at the larger end.

Size Dependence of the Plasmon Ruler Equation for Two-Dimensional Metal Nanosphere Arrays

The optical properties of fcc metal (gold and silver) nanostructures have recently been the focus of intense scientific study. The driving force for the interest is because, upon interaction with incident electromagnetic waves, such as light, these metal nanostructures exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). 4 The LSPR results in both an enhancement of the near-field electromagnetic...

Universal scaling and Fano resonance in the plasmon coupling between gold nanorods.

The plasmon coupling between metal nanocrystals can lead to large plasmon shifts, enormous electric field enhancements, and new plasmon modes. Metal nanorods, unlike spherical ones, possess a transverse and a longitudinal plasmon mode owing to their geometrical anisotropy. Consequently, the plasmon coupling between metal nanorods is much more complicated than that between nanospheres. For the l...

Plasmon coupling of gold nanorods at short distances and in different geometries.

The experimentally determined scattering spectra of discrete, crystalline, gold nanorod dimers arranged side-to-side, end-to-end, at right angles in different orientations and also with longitudinal offsets are reported along with the electron micrographs of the individual dimers. The spectra exhibit both red- and blue-shifted surface plasmon resonances, consistent with the plasmon hybridizatio...

Insights from a nanoparticle minuet: two-dimensional membrane profiling through silver plasmon ruler tracking.

Individual pairs of polymer-tethered silver nanoparticles, so-called silver plasmon rulers, enable distance and orientation measurements on the nanoscale. The reduced linear dichroism and the spectrum of the light scattered from individual plasmon rulers encode information about their orientation and average interparticle separation, respectively. We took advantage of the gain in information si...

The plasmonic ruler goes 3D!

Noble metal nanoparticles have distinct optical properties arising from localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). It is wellestablished that a LSPR spectrum depends strongly on the size and shape of the nanoparticles as well as on the distance between the nanoparticles. The precise measurement of the interparticle distance-dependent LSPR spectrum has been the fundamental principle of many ana...
